The conflict over Taiwan is keeping the world on tenterhooks: the communist leadership in Beijing regards the island state as a "renegade province" that must be reunited with the motherland. Taipei, on the other hand, wants to preserve its de facto independence and hard-won democracy.

In his lecture at the Munich Adult Education Center, Stephan Thome will focus on his adopted home of Taiwan: the development from a dictatorship to a modern democracy, the formation of a Taiwanese identity, relations with the People's Republic - as well as the question of how the current conflict in the Taiwan Strait should be classified.

Dr. Stephan Thome is a writer and sinologist. His book "Narrow Waters, Dangerous Currents. Über den Konflikt in der Taiwanstraße" was published by Suhrkamp Verlag and nominated for the NDR Non-Fiction Prize 2024.
