The Bright Silence - Melodic Songwriter Rock

Moving from the USA to Germany in March 2020 was in many ways an incisive experience for American musician Kevin Johnston. It is therefore fitting that his dramatic and emotionally moving music appeals to people all over the world. Johnston is the songwriter and lead singer of his rock band The Bright Silence and is an exceptional musical talent with his unmistakable voice. His dynamic, theatrical and impressively wide vocal range is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke, while the determination in his stage presence is reminiscent of Win Butler from Arcade Fire or Johnston's old colleague Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck). His stylistically diverse lyrics also reflect a wide range of influences. (think: Fleet Foxes, Madison Cunningham through to Coldplay or Nada Surf).

Born in Colorado, Johnston, who now lives in Leipzig, founded the band in 2010 in the middle of the singer-songwriter scene in Brooklyn, New York. Since then, he has performed his own songs as a guest on the US TV show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", fronted the Michael Eisner-produced band and show of the same name "The All-For-Nots", worked with Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Rós at the New Museum in New York City and fronted a Prince tribute in front of over 9,000 people at the sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheater. He has written and performed music for independent films, released two albums with his band and a live album, and has released several live video solo performances in venues ranging from log cabins to dilapidated East German movie theaters.

Johnston has toured Europe regularly since 2014. In 2022, he performed with fellow New Yorker Boris Pelekh (Gogol Bordello, Marc Martel & One Vision of Queen) at Berlin's Columbiahalle and joined longtime collaborator Misty Boyce (Sam Smith, Lord Huron, Sarah Bareilles, Børns) on several stops of her German tour.

The band members of The Bright Silence include top-class musicians who play with Sting, Elle King, Chet Faker (Nick Murphy), Theo Katzman, A Great Big World, Tegan and Sara, Ingrid Michaelson and many others. Drummer Martin Marschall and bassist Matthis Raidt complete the band, which came together in Leipzig.
