Trio Abstrakt: Momi | Harðarson

Saxophone, drums and piano - the line-up is reminiscent of both a chamber ensemble and a jazz combo.

And indeed, Salim(a) Javaid, Shiau-Shiuan Hung and Marlies Debacker, who make up Trio Abstrakt, feel just as much at home in composed contemporary music as they do in free improvisation. In their playing, the two genres cross-fertilize each other and both contribute to an unusually broad spectrum of sound and expressive possibilities.

When it comes to notated works, the ensemble strives for longer collaborations with the composers - for example with the Italian Marco Momi, in whose atmospherically dense piece "Vuoi che perduti" the sounds produced on stage encounter a mysterious, non-localizable "distant voice". "If we were to speak in fairy tale language," writes Momi, "I would say that these sounds represent the fate of the one who is called to cross the forest."

The three also have a proven collaboration with Haukur Þór Harðarson: the ensemble learned to appreciate the Icelandic composer's fragile and physical sound language in 2021 when it took on the world premiere of the trio piece "Hollow".

The concert will be recorded for radio by WDR. The broadcast date and link will be announced here at a later date.
