The Joni Project

Three women, three multi-instrumentalists and singer songwriters join forces for a unique project: to revive the great music of Joni Mitchell. With three strong voices and many instruments.

The Joni Project comes together in 2021 for the 50th anniversary of Joni Mitchell's legendary album "Blue" and brings the masterpiece to the stage in its entirety. They celebrate their premiere with two sold-out concerts at the Elbphilharmonie Open Air. Many more successful and moving shows followed, turning the project into a real band.
Anne de Wolff, known from her collaboration with BAP, Bosse or Calexico, the Dutch singer and composer Iris Romen and Hamburg's Beatles expert and interpreter Stefanie Hempel venture into the holy grail of all songwriters with their reinterpretation of "Blue". No album has coined the term "singer songwriter" more.
In its relentless self-reflection, loneliness and vulnerability, it set new standards in the world of pop and, above all, opened the doors wide for the female voice and narrative style.

With colorful instrumentation, The Joni Project brings Mitchell's
Mitchell's bittersweet songs from "All I Want" to "California" and "River" in all their dark and light shades. And they never forget one thing: Joni Mitchell's songs are often sad,
always honest and "confessional", but at the same time they are full of wit, spirit and poetry. With a lot of knowledge and humor, the musicians tell the stories behind the songs and about Joni Mitchell's life during the live shows.

Their debut album "Shades of Blue" will be released in November 2023. On the tour for the album, the trio performs "Blue" and many other songs from Mitchell's oeuvre. On November 7, 2023, Joni Mitchell celebrated her 80th birthday. To mark the occasion, The Joni Project conceived and organized a brilliant, sold-out birthday concert at Kampnagel in Hamburg with many musical guests such as Lisa Bassenge, Gitte Haenning, Niels Frevert and CATT.
