Following their two acclaimed performances in September, Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders have now announced that they will be going on tour in the UK and Europe next spring (before supporting the Foo Fighters in the USA in the summer) and playing five shows in Germany. The program is announced quite casually: "Including new tracks and Pretenders classics." Although, it must be admitted, only singer and guitarist Hynde remains from the original line-up. And so she came to Hamburg for the Reeperbahn Festival and Berlin in the fall with a very young bassist and a Danish drummer. And of course with her not-so-new guitarist James Walbourne, with whom she worked on the last two albums "Hate for Sale" and the current "Relentless". Thanks to this trusting interplay, they turned out very well and both have that old wave sound that made the band world stars in the early 80s and which still oscillates between experimentation and classic rock. Relentless" in particular has been highly praised, has risen higher in the charts than any Pretenders record in the past quarter of a century and will, one can certainly expect, appear in a number of best-of-2023 lists towards the end of the year. The two guitarists also harmonize excellently on stage and produce a pretty powerful sound that hits you right in the gut. You could feel this raw power at the Pretenders' live shows and it made you forget that there was a very proud grandmother of two on stage. Chrissie Hynde has lost none of the power that made her one of the first very energetic band leaders on the rock circuit, the sharp humor that flashes through her announcements, her talent for songwriting and her high level of musicality.
