Director and screenwriter Jonathan Glazer ("Under the Skin", "The Fall") drew inspiration for the film from the book of the same name by the late author Martin Amis. His film sheds light on the horrors of the Holocaust from the perspective of Rudolf and Hedwig Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz and his family, who lead an extremely privileged life in their picture-book home wall to wall with the extermination camp. Rudolf Höss is portrayed by Christian Friedel ("The White Ribbon", "Elser - He Would Have Changed the World"). Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Case", "Toni Erdmann") shines in the role of Höss' wife Hedwig. The production design is by Chris Oddy ("Under the Skin"), the cinematographer is the multi-award-winning DOP Lukasz Zal ("Ida", "Cold War - The Latitude of Love"). The film was shot in Poland.
