Theater im Wohnzimmer – Die Marionettenbühne der Familie Greiner 1928-1940

Private puppet theater in the family has a long history - from often homemade hand puppets to the bourgeois paper theater of the 19th century to "real" marionette stages.

In Johannes Greiner's Munich family, ambitious marionette theater was performed from the 1920s until the outbreak of the Second World War - with all theatrical effects, live music and distributed speaking roles. The repertoire ranged from fairytale classics such as Hansel and Gretel to Pocci plays and Faust. A list from the early 1930s lists ten "ready-to-play" pieces.

The audience was initially his own family, but friends and neighbors' children also watched. There were also occasional performances at schools.

Only individual parts of the theater still exist - mainly sets and textbooks - and a few photos. Above all, however, there are many stories about the family stage from the time shortly before the emergence of modern media in children's bedrooms. Johannes Greiner invites you to a historical search for clues and an exciting encounter in the theater apartment of Gerhard Weiß, who still sees himself and his theater I-piccoi in the tradition of the Schwabing Zimmertheater: Where living becomes a stage.

Directions: The best way to get to Theater I-piccoli is by public transport, e.g. U3 or U6 in the direction of Münchner Freiheit. Get off there and turn into Haimhauserstraße, which is crossed by Marktstraße, until you reach "Grünes Eck". At the entrance to Marktstraße 16, ring the bell at Figurentheater Gerhard Weiß and then go up to the third floor (there is no elevator): Welcome!
