Theatergruppe Crombach - »Wir sind keine Barbaren«

As a supporting program for the Philosophical Matinee 2024, this year we are showing the play "Wir sind keine Barbaren" by Philipp Löhle (director: Marzel Maraite) of the Theatergruppe Crombach (B), an amateur theater with well-known size in the German-speaking community and references to the internationally working theater group AGORA.

The play will be performed on two days:

"We are not barbarians"

The sudden appearance of a refugee upsets the idyllic, middle-class life of a village community - with deadly consequences. Idyllic sounds ring out the play: a home choir sings about a community in which WE are capitalized. WE are all the same, are 73 years old and have at least three hobbies. In this case, WE are Barbara and Mario and their new neighbors Linda and Paul. Even though their first meeting is more than bumpy, the two couples find enough common interests - flat screens for the men, yoga for the women - to maintain a polite friendship. But when a stranger turns up one night and Barbara quickly grants him asylum in her apartment, the pleasantries are over. Is he in need of help? Is he a threat? Or is he an exotic temptation? Before a final decision can be made, Barbara and the man disappear. And the home choir has already passed judgment.

The production is based on the play of the same name by Philipp Löhle, published by Rowohlt-Verlag, and takes up the encounter with the "stranger" and the themes of integration, prejudice and our treatment of refugees, and negotiates the questioning and defense of our basic democratic order and values.

The Crombach theater group was founded in 1980 on the initiative of Marcel Cremer (director of the Agora Theater) in the village of the same name in East Belgium with the aim of bringing together theater enthusiasts. Since then, it has successfully staged and performed a large number of plays of various genres, including fairy tales and classics such as Goethe's "Faust" and Dürrenmatt's "The Visit of the Old Lady", as well as works of contemporary literature and its own productions, such as "Hoch lebe Hochwürden" by Neil Boyd and Philipp Löhle's "Wir sind keien Barbaren", which is shown here in a new edition - always with the aim of holding up a mirror to the audience, but not with a raised index finger, but with humor and the courage to be self-critical. https://theatercrombach.be
