Gulliver's Travels, for children aged 4 and over
Who doesn't know them, the Lilliputians and Brobdingnagians from Gulliver's Travels? Georg Philipp Telemann enthusiastically took up the story by his contemporary Jonathan Swift and set it to music in a suite in which he directly adopts a graphic notation with the largest and smallest note values.
In this adaptation for the stage, the play with relationships such as large and small, low and high, strange and peculiar, is spun further: The violins have transformed into large violones on the journey or into a charming recorder accompanied by a noble treble viol, the "Dessus de Viole". Through the interplay of narrative, visual and musical elements, Gulliver's perspective also makes us wonder at the things we take for granted today.
"I can find no greater sign of madness in a man than when he is in a state of eternal certainty about his own virtue or the reasonableness of his society." (from Gulliver's third voyage to the Laputans).
