The deep sea - a wonderful world at the bottom of the ocean! It offers a unique habitat for countless species, many of which, according to scientists, have not even been discovered yet. According to scientists, many of the species that live there have yet to be discovered. But the least explored habitat on Earth has now become the target of a new industry - deep-sea mining. Its aim is to mine important raw materials that are used to manufacture smartphones or electric batteries, for example, in order to make the green energy transition possible.
But is it absolutely necessary to use this new type of mining to extract raw materials such as manganese, nickel or cobalt? Are there already other approaches to creating a green energy transition?
The Öko-Institut has written a study on this on behalf of Greenpeace e.V. If you would like to find out more about the results and findings of this study, come along to the lecture followed by a discussion with Andreas Manhart, one of the authors of the study. After the lecture, you will have the opportunity to ask Mr. Manhart questions about the topic. The event will take place on 09.07.2025 at 19.00 in the event room of the Haus des Engagements.
