Tobi Dahmen und Akram Al Saud präsentieren: AL-FAZIA’

In the organizer's words:

The documentary graphic novel tells the harrowing true story of Akram Al Saud, who survived the Syrian torture system.

The event will be held in English.

In haunting images based on intensive conversations, Tobi Dahmen tells the story of Akram Al Saud, a young architecture student who moved to Aleppo at the age of 19 and was unjustly arrested for the first time in 2010. After nine months in cruel detention, he joined the revolution against the Assad regime. Despite further arrests, he maintained his hope for a free Syria, but eventually had to flee to Europe in 2016.

At the same time, the comic shows the special collaboration between Al Saud and Dahmen and sets an example of how the unspeakable can find expression in art. The book was created as part of the international project "Survior-Centred Visual Narratives" at the University of Victoria in Canada and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). In a comprehensive appendix, the historical background and collaboration surrounding the project are examined in detail.

In addition to a reading, Tobi Dahmen and Akram Al Saud will talk with moderator Matthias Wieland about the collaboration and the process of creating the documentary graphic novel.
