You can take us at our word, dear audience, because this year's program contains almost exclusively works that in one way or another are directly related to personalities who were important in Mozart's life.

First and foremost his father Leopold Mozart, who not only recognized his son's genius at the earliest possible stage but also nurtured his abilities with the greatest care and dedication. The journey alone, which he undertook in 1762 as a completely unprivileged court musician to the courts of Versailles and London with his hitherto largely unknown "child prodigies" Wolfgang (6) and Nannerl (9), was a brilliant feat of logistics and promotion.

The Bavarian Elector Karl Theodor, to whom the 24-year-old composer (and we Munich residents) owed the commission for his first great opera "Idomeneo", which premiered in Munich in 1781, cannot be valued highly enough as a patron of the young Mozart.

Another example are the masterful string quartets K. 458 & K. 464, which Mozart presented to his congenial contemporary Joseph Haydn with the words "Famous man and my dearest friend, take my children here".

The Piano Violin Sonata in B flat major K. 378 is an exception which, as we know, proves the rule. It was chosen for its consummate beauty by someone who may not have made a name for Mozart himself, but for "toujours Mozart".
