»Tracks of Memory, 1941–2023«. Erinnerungsprojekte in der Ukraine und Deutschland

The Jewish community in Düsseldorf has been actively involved in Ukraine for over eight years. With the "Tracks of memory" project, it followed the traces of Holocaust survivors from Czernowitz to Babyn Yar and Drobyzkyj Yar and organized well over 200 events, most of which were educational remembrance events to combat forgetting. But "Tracks of Memory" has also creatively explored the culture of remembrance and modern Jewish life in Germany and Ukraine with art exhibitions, workshops and remarkable concerts and theater projects. The project "Tracks of Memory, 1941-2023" verifies the culture of remembrance as an important factor in German-Ukrainian city partnerships, especially during the war of aggression that Russia is currently waging against Ukraine.

The workshop exhibition in the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus in Düsseldorf provides an overview of the diverse activities and results of the project and forms the framework for visits by school classes, discussions with contemporary witnesses and various events such as book and film presentations, lectures and talks, which the now growing "Tracks of Memory" network has developed together.

On the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the town twinning between Düsseldorf and Chernivtsi, "Tracks of Memory" is taking stock and presenting itself in Düsseldorf. The project was funded by the Federal Foreign Office as part of the "Expansion of Cooperation with Civil Society in the Eastern Partnership Countries 2023".
