Amsterdam, 1942: Max Beckmann and his wife Mathilde, known as Quappi, have been living in exile for five years, but since the German invasion of the Netherlands, they have hardly been able to find peace and a livelihood here either. Max receives support from the art historian Erhard Göpel, of all people, who is supposed to collect pictures for a museum planned by Hitler. With the help of previously unpublished diaries, author and entrepreneur Marianne Ludes tells the story of a historically authentic friendship in a knowledgeable and captivating way. "Trio mit Tiger" (Penguin) is a fact-based double biography and a gripping novel about "how art can sometimes take revenge on life itself" (Denis Scheck). The discussion will be led by the celebrated essayist Daniel Schreiber ("Liebe! Ein Aufruf" and others).
