What began in the 90s as an ironic pop project among friends from Tübingen has developed over the decades into a cross-generational cult phenomenon: Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band. In the summer of 2024, the film accompanies the eight-piece band on their big open-air tour across Germany - in front of thousands of fans with sunflowers, glitter and glued-on chest hair toupees.
With unpublished archive material, intense live footage and intimate backstage moments, "And it was summer - Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band" tells the story of a band caught between euphoria, exhaustion and decades of friendship. The film looks back on the first small gigs at the beginning of the 90s, the unexpected success and a life in a state of emergency between tour bus, confetti and pop medleys.
The focus is on the close friendship between Thomas Kuhn and Philipp Feldtkeller and the question of how long a life on stage can actually last. A warm-hearted, funny and at the same time touching documentary about music, friendship and the art of taking life easy - even when it gets hard.
