What motivates care workers from Eastern Europe to come to Germany? And how do they experience their life "under Dojczen"? What does their everyday life look like between care, adaptation and self-assertion?

In her debut novel "Unter Dojczen", Mia Raben gives a voice to a professional group that is omnipresent in German households and yet often remains invisible. She tells the story of Polish nurse Jola, who is burnt out and yet full of hope as she sits in a minibus that comes from Poland and delivers care workers to Germany like parcels. Jola has only heard good things about Ursula "Uschi" von Klewen, the matriarch of a family of doctors in Hamburg, from her placement agency. Experience teaches her to adapt in order to please her German boss. But when the spirited Uschi treats her with respect and appreciation, Jola slowly regains her strength. A deep connection develops between the two women, characterized by mutual respect and unexpected adventures. In the end, Jola even confides her biggest secret to Uschi.

"Unter Dojczen" is a novel about care and exploitation, about arriving in a foreign country - and about a friendship that transcends borders.
