URBAN JAZZ FESTIVAL 2024 - TAGESTICKET FREITAG 09.02.24

In the organizer's words:

URBAN JAZZ FESTIVAL 2024
// DAY TICKET FRIDAY 09.02.24

Hamburg has a new jazz festival! Urban jazz is the soundtrack of the big city. Full of energy and constantly changing. Wanja Hasselmann (NuH[u]ssel Orchestra) gathers exciting bands at Birdland on two festival days and gives not only jazz listeners an impression of the sound of Hamburg's urban jazz. Urban jazz: a generation of musicians who have grown up with a particularly open attitude towards hip-hop, electro, songwriting and sample beats are establishing an "up-to-date" sound in the Hanseatic city that has been making the rounds in cities like London and New York for several years now. A line-up that has never been seen before!

LINE-UP FRIDAY:

| OLIVER HERLITZKA QUINTET
Old and new. Black and white. Light and dark. The "Oliver Herlitzka Quintet" from Hamburg belongs to the young generation of jazz musicians who mix up and reinterpret styles and genres. When they play together, the music sometimes sounds powerful and full of energy, sometimes delicate and fragile. With their unmistakable sound, they invite the audience to join them on a journey through sound and emotion. A musical experience, always new. The quintet recorded their new album "Between Edges" in the "Musica Fattoria" recording studio in Osnabrück at the beginning of the year. It will be released this fall on the HEY!JAZZ Records label.

| NUHUSSEL ORCHESTRA |

In the heart of St. Pauli, the NuHussel Orchestra was founded in 2015 by Wanja C. Hasselmann (Drums/Compositions) and since then has skillfully maneuvered through everything modern jazz has to offer; influenced by funk, hip hop and classical music to rock or electro. The band follows a "collective" concept and performs with different features and guest musicians, so that you can hear more than just the seven-member line-up. This is how the new city sound of a world-open generation is created: Urban Score. After the debut album "First Things Frist" (Unit Records) was released in 2017 with excellent reviews, the band won the Future Sounds Jazz Prize in the same year. Things continued in 2018 with celebrated concerts at the Elbjazz Festival or the Leverkusener Jazztage, where they were included in the renowned live concert TV series "Rockpalast" by German TV Channel WDR. In summer 2019, the NuHussel Orchestra presented their second album: "The Forest", which was recorded in a five-day session with 38 musicians of the urban jazz scene from 12 nations and accompanied by features such as Hamburg rapper Nico Suave or the outstanding New York jazz singer Alana Alexander. The new project "KIDS" - HipHop and Urban Culture meets Modern Jazz - came 2022. The five-track EP with support from none other than German rap legend Afrob manages the balancing act between jazz tradition and zeitgeist. October 2023 the new project of the group dropped: "BAHIA". This three-track EP was recorded as a "live at studio" session and features a vast variety of brasilien influences. The sound, culture, rhythm and emotion.

| SKILLBECK |

Jazz meets techno meets hip hop. Bombastic basses, chunky saxophone solos and rolling rhythms will make you dance and be amazed. Skilbeck combines jazz, rock and techno with the finest punchlines from the "potato rap" genre! Without a harmony instrument, but with double bass and clarinet, the four Hamburgers come along digitally and at the same time feel completely analog in the stomach area. Queer German lyrics without the son of a dog and fat sounds that sound like more.
