What remains of our self when memory becomes an option? When his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) undergoes an experimental medical procedure to erase all memory of their relationship after a painful break-up with Joel (Jim Carrey), Joel undergoes the same procedure. As he watches his memories of Clementine disappear, he realizes he still has feelings for her. However, it is almost too late to correct his mistake.

Michel Gondry's film unfolds a poetic narrative about love, shame, hurt and self-protection - and about the question of whether the "self" is even conceivable without its fractures.
