Vernissage - Vanishing Berlin: "Neukölln re:visited - In der Zwischenzeit" / 48h Neukölln Festival

In the organizer's words:

In search of the soul of Berlin, photographer Alexander Steffen (Vanishing Berlin) has been roaming his home city for many years, documenting places threatened with disappearance: Striking store fronts, industrial buildings that have become unprofitable, overgrown and deserted wastelands and, last but not least, the vacancy that sometimes characterizes entire streets. He photographs fleeting sights that we had no idea we would ever miss.

The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 has reinforced his leitmotif. Suddenly, standstill reigned everywhere. Instead of individual stores, entire professional groups were now in danger of disappearing. Cinemas, concert halls and theaters stood empty for months. Berlin was closed.

A quiet city has an eerie effect on many people. For Alexander Steffen, it was the inspiration for his latest photo book "In der Zwischenzeit / For the Time Being".

The traditional business "Willy Schmidt Steinmetzmeister" had to close in 2021 and the premises were left to decay. On the occasion of the 48h Neukölln Festival 2024, the former workshops will be used as an exhibition space for the first time.

Photographs & screen prints on the theme of "Urban Silence" will be on display. At the vernissage of the photo exhibition, Projekt Freizeit will play one of their rare vinyl sets.
