Two memorials in Bremen remind us that almost 300 Sinti and Roma from northwest Germany were deported from the Alter Schlachthof to Auschwitz-Birkenau between March 8 and 10, 1943: the Schmidt family grave at the Waller Friedhof cemetery and the memorial plaque at the Schlachthof cultural center.
These are the starting and finishing points of the approximately two-and-a-half-hour bike tour, which leads via Osterfeuerberg to the Torfkanal, with stops and detailed information at the places where most of the deportees lived and were arrested. At the old homes of the Sinti in the west of Bremen, members of the "Arbeitskreis Erinnern an den März 43" ("Working Group Remembering March 43") report on life in the years before 1943, when the pressure of persecution steadily increased, but also on the days of arrest and deportation.
With Dr. Hans Hesse, Ralf Lorenzen, Angela Piplak and Marcus Reichert.
