Lecture as part of the exhibition for the 2025 Bremen Housing Award at the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven

Since 2005, Bremen has honored outstanding construction projects by Bremen-based developers with the Bremen Housing Award. Among the 84 submitted projects currently on display at the Historical Museum in Bremerhaven, ten construction projects received awards. Among them were, for example, the renovation of the Gründerzeit house at Goethestraße 32/34 in Bremerhaven and the Spiralenhaus in Wulsdorf, owned by the Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft Bremerhaven mbH, which has already received multiple awards.

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, real estate renovator Rolf Thörner and architect Hans-Joachim Ewert will present the two construction projects in two short talks at a joint event with the Bremen Chamber of Architects. The event begins at 6 p.m. Free admission.

At Goethestraße 32/34—which received the “Quartier” special award—a Gründerzeit-era building constructed in 1890 was gutted and restored in accordance with historic preservation guidelines, connected to district heating, and made accessible. Historic architectural elements such as doors, stucco details, and wooden floors were restored. Together with the addition of guest restrooms and balconies and the shared use of the courtyard, this project—funded by urban renewal grants—has become a catalyst for the neighborhood.

The Spiralenhaus in the Wulsdorf neighborhood, which has received an award of recognition, is a social housing apartment building from the postwar 1950s. Instead of demolishing the building, the developer chose to make it accessible by adding a ramp and integrating new balconies. This allowed the property to be upgraded in a cost-effective, low-maintenance, and socially responsible manner, while also creating communal spaces that strengthen the neighborhood and promote integration.
