Schwetziger SWR Festival

He survived the Thirty Years' War. Was orphaned at the age of 14. Lost four of his five children shortly after birth. Was dismissed as a pastor because he would not let go of his Lutheran convictions. The theologian and poet Paul Gerhardt showed attitude. And he was a dazzling figure. When singing folk and sacred songs, there is no getting around his 150 or so texts. Wie soll ich dich empfangen - Geh aus, mein Herz, und suche Freud - O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden - Fröhlich soll mein Herze springen: These are all poems by Paul Gerhardt. Among the composers who set them to music, Johann Sebastian Bach was the most prominent. On the 350th anniversary of the poet's death, the classical band Spark and the Windsbach Boys' Choir are dedicating a joint concert to Gerhardt, which is also intended to build a bridge to the present day. Songs become songs here; recorders, melodica, strings and piano complement the boys' choir. And the finale is crowned by the commissioned work Von Freude getragen by the Munich-based multi-style composer David Reichelt.
