In 1872, the young American Isabel Archer moves to her English family's country estate, where she is soon approached by various men with marriage proposals. At least she finds a soul mate in her cousin, who is suffering from tuberculosis. After a surprising inheritance, she travels to Italy and meets the penniless art collector and bon vivant Gilbert Osmond, who seems to have a similar attitude to her against convention. The two marry - but Gilbert turns out to be small-minded, unloving and chauvinistic...
In her Henry James adaptation, Campion looks at the conflict between status and independence in the form of an opulent historical drama.
