Vorlesung im Kolleg: Schlaganfallversorgung im Wandel

In the organizer's words:

Stroke care in transition: Advances in acute treatment and new challenges as a result of demographic developments

Acute circulatory disorders of the brain lead to a wide variety of symptoms such as speech and vision disorders, one-sided sensory disturbances or paralysis of an arm or leg. Modern therapies aim to reopen blocked vessels using drug and catheter-based techniques. The achievements of the past 30 years or so also include the establishment of around 350 specialized treatment units, known as stroke units, throughout Germany. These advances have improved treatment results and reduced the mortality rate of the disease. The effects of demographic change are already noticeable and will become even more apparent in the coming decades. As the incidence of stroke is strictly age-dependent with a strong increase in older age, a significant increase in the disease is to be expected. The resulting demands on the healthcare system will include both the area of acute care and thus the inpatient treatment sector as well as aftercare and thus the outpatient sector. On the other hand, there will be shortages within the healthcare system, mainly due to the lack of specialists. Resource-conserving and stable long-term solutions are therefore required along the entire treatment pathway.

Prof. Dr. Dominik Michalski will highlight the advances in stroke research and treatment and the factors that have influenced and continue to influence them.
