In Bremen, the name Borgward not only stands for elegant cars of the 1950s, but also for one of the most spectacular company bankruptcies of the post-war period. The Bremen Senate, which granted Bremen's largest employer with 22,000 employees restructuring aid, initially took over the Borgward factories at the beginning of 1961, but failed to restructure them. Borgward had to file for bankruptcy in July 1961. The reasons for Borgward's bankruptcy are still the subject of controversy today. Jochen Tholen, a profound Borgward expert and co-author of the standard work "Borgward's Fall", recalls the events of that time, which left its mark on many Bremen families.
