2024 marked the eightieth anniversary of the so-called "Stauffenberg" assassination. A good opportunity to take a critical look at the reception of the event, which continued to occupy the Federal Republic of Germany long after the end of the war. In her lecture, historian Ruth Hoffmann outlines a history of the mentality of German remembrance, particularly in relation to the resistance against Hitler. Beginning in 1945, she spans a broad arc up to the present day and makes it clear how July 20, 1944 has been repeatedly instrumentalized for party politics or ideology - and how the perspective on the resistance fighters has changed. Immediately after the end of the war, Stauffenberg, von Tresckow and others were primarily seen as traitors, and now even right-wing populist forces refer to them to legitimize their criticism of democracy.
