Lecture by Helmut Draxler: The end of left-wing art history?

For a long time, left-wing art history was inspired by developing a material and social reading of artworks and historical events. This seemed to guarantee that it would not remain trapped in idealistic and ideological doom and would pave a realistic path to a bright, reconciled future. Today, the question arises as to how such a future and the progressive path towards it can be conceived at all, and what role art history would have to play in this. Does the myth of art history, founded in the historical-philosophical unity of its objects, still have to be brought to an end in order to bring a left-wing, emancipatory sense to the fore, or is it not rather a question of the myth of bringing things to an end and thus of the question of how the rhetorical figure of an end could be understood within the framework of a decidedly left-wing art history: the end of art, the end of history, the end of art history and even its own end?
