The Alte Galerie in Graz is one of the lesser-known collections in Europe. Since 2005, works from the Middle Ages to around 1800 have been on display in Eggenberg Palace. Although most of the objects in the display collection have been researched in detail, there are numerous works of art about which little is known. In many cases, the foundations have not yet been laid to make the works accessible to the scientific community for fruitful research, from attributions to image content and provenance to digitization. The lecture will give an insight into the daily routine of curatorial work and the difficulty of conducting solid basic research with a small team. At the same time, it will discuss the challenges, opportunities and strategies for conducting research in the museum and making the collection better known internationally.
