3344 tons of freight make their way along the Rhine. Here, on an inland waterway vessel, young Rudmer grows up among containers. The work is hard, the shifts dictated by the logic of global flows of goods. No trace of privacy. But Rudmer wants to assert himself and get his chance to stand on the bridge one day: As captain. Carlo Kohal spent four years filming on the Panerai again and again and found fascinating, monumental images that are underpinned by a congenial film score. The film always remains at the eye level of the young protagonist with almost playful observations of everyday life. The result is an impressively entertaining film that deserves one thing above all else: The big screen. Jan Sebening
