Was geschieht aktuell im Iran?

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly become the focus of public attention: as in 2022/23, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people in Iran are currently taking to the streets to demand an end to the mullah regime despite the massive, deadly repression. The Shiite theocracy is not only brutally suppressing all aspirations for freedom at home, but has also launched a massive expansion program in the region - especially after the sanctions were largely lifted following the conclusion of the so-called "nuclear deal" in 2015. Not only have countless Iranians had to leave their homeland as a result, but many Syrians, Iraqis and Kurds have also fled as a consequence of their policies.

But the mullahs' long arm also reaches as far as Germany. It is not uncommon for people not even abroad to be safe from the regime. Iran maintains an international network of groups and organizations that try to exert influence in the respective societies and at the same time put pressure on and threaten refugees and members of the opposition. Bijan Hassan Pour-Razavi will give an overview of (pro-)Iranian networks in Germany and why they pose a threat both to refugees from Iran and to an open and democratic society in Germany.
