The Hollywood film "Devotion" from 1946, a biopic about the Brontë sisters, flopped - Erich Wolfgang Korngold's masterful film music, on the other hand, is still captivating today and is able to portray the dramatic potential of the plot far better than the film itself. Also from 1946 is the cello concerto by Theo Mackeben, who went down in music history in 1928 as the conductor of the premiere of the "Threepenny Opera". Floris Mijnders, principal cellist of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, plays the "Symphonic Ballad" orchestrated in magnificent colors - a long-forgotten discovery in the cello repertoire! Leonard Slatkin's "Kinah" builds another bridge to Hollywood: Slatkin composed the work as a tribute to his parents Felix Slatkin and Eleanor Aller, who worked as a violinist and cellist respectively in the Hollywood music business. With his lively ballet music "Fancy Free", Leonard Bernstein prepared his later Broadway success "On the Town" and created a milestone in modern ballet history. Wayne Marshall presents this program full of discoveries between classical music, Broadway and film music.
