According to German law, the surviving members of the "Charlie Hebdo" editorial team should be sentenced because their satires motivated Islamists to disturb the public peace. An absurdity, says Michael Schmidt-Salomon, who advocates the deletion of the "blasphemy paragraph" 166 StGB. In his lecture, the philosopher explains why this step is necessary and presents the latest book by Richard Malka, the lawyer for Charlie Hebdo, who is committed to "the right to ridicule God" - especially against the backdrop of Islamist terror.

Michael Schmidt-Salomon, Dr. phil. Dr. h.c., is a philosopher and co-founder and spokesman of the Giordano Bruno Foundation. His books have sold around 300,000 copies in German-speaking countries and have been translated into several languages. Schmidt-Salomon was instrumental in the successful campaigns to remove sections 217 and 219a from the German Criminal Code. Now, he says, it is § 166's turn - especially as he himself fell victim to the "blasphemy paragraph" 30 years ago.
