After all, how can one turn a seemingly dry topic like justice and the law into such a side-splittingly funny cabaret show? Even at its premiere in May 2000, the audience response was unusually enthusiastic. More than 600 performances followed, drawing over 170,000 spectators, and the impression has only grown stronger: this is a German cabaret classic. But here’s what it’s about: Scientists have determined that in 2 million years, there will only be two life forms left on Earth: termites and lawyers. Both are incredibly insatiable creatures! No matter which of the two species infests you, half your house will be gone afterward. But let’s get to the point—what’s it all about? Well, it’s about laws. Remember that botched genetic experiment: they tried to cross the blueprint for a maze with the alphabet, and what came out was a German legal provision. Which one, exactly? There’s a wide selection, but let’s take, for example, the ones that stipulate that you can become Chancellor at 18, but aren’t considered an adult under criminal law until you’re 21. Well, in that case, a war of aggression would still be punished under juvenile criminal law. And so the show bravely winds its way through the jungle of legal provisions all the way to the darkly humorous finale: cannibalism that goes unpunished.
