Everyone knows it exists. Everyone thinks they possess it. Yet no one has ever seen it: taste, a sense of beauty, an antenna for happiness, and the tactile sense of longing. In his book *As You Like It*, Dr. Ulrich Raulff—historian and former director of the German Literature Archive in Marbach—takes participants on a journey through a materialistic vanity fair and an obstacle course of “likes”—from “Meissen porcelain” to “Apple.”

In his work, Raulff explores new eras of taste and aesthetic codes. His search for clues takes him to Paris around 1800, to Victorian England, and all the way to the present day of “Airbnb” and dining as an “experience.” He examines plundering expeditions, the suffering of others, and his own historical guilt. At the same time, however, he also sheds light on the cultural achievements of taste and its many facets.
