Listen to the podcast together and talk to the makers of "Die Entscheidung"

There is currently an intense debate in politics, the media and society about whether an AfD ban procedure should be initiated or whether it would do more harm than good. A look at history shows that Germany has already had several experiences with party banning proceedings: from the failed attempts against the NPD to the historic KPD ban in 1956. What lessons can be learned from these experiences for the current discourse?

"The decision. Politik, die uns bis heute prägt" is a BR podcast in which the background to political decisions of the past are shown in order to understand why our present is the way we experience it. Journalist Christine Auerbach pursues her passion for telling great history through small stories and asks what significance political decisions have for individual people. Thies Marsen is the perfect addition to this edition of Die Entscheidung, as the journalist has been researching right-wing extremism in Germany for many years - from the Third Reich to the present day, from interviews with contemporary witnesses to five years of reporting on the NSU trial.

The evening begins with listening together: For about an hour, we listen to a compilation of the podcast to immerse ourselves in the past and present of party bans in Germany. The first part of the evening will be accompanied by music from trumpeter Franziska Ott. Afterwards, the two podcast hosts will answer questions from the audience - from the creation of the podcast to the question: What can and must our democracy endure?
