Lecture by Dr. Katharina Bothe

The cruise industry is booming - but what does life and work look like behind the scenes? Cruise ships are floating microcosms of global labor migration: cultural diversity and social hierarchies characterize life on board. In her presentation, the speaker will provide insights into a cultural studies research project that examines the working conditions and social dynamics on board cruise ships. The focus is on the perspectives of the employees, who come from different countries and professional groups and work together in close quarters. It also deals with questions that affect politics, business and society in equal measure: How can fair working conditions be shaped in a globally networked industry? What responsibilities do companies and legislators have? And what can we learn about mobility, diversity and sustainable business from the experiences on board?
