Wissen um 11: Vom Reden in Metaphern

Science speaks in terms, poetry in metaphors. Concepts are precise but abstract, metaphors are imprecise but vivid. "At the foot of the mountain" is down, no matter how high the mountain is. "Here is 48.34 m above sea level" is precise, but it can be at the top of the Blockland landfill or at the "foot" of the Jungfraujoch. Insofar as the modern world has been scientifically produced, "disenchanted", reality itself has become abstract - "society" or "reality" cannot simply be "seen" - metaphors themselves have come under criticism. This is why Hegel already spoke of the "end of the art period". Nevertheless, literature cannot get away from metaphors.
