WONK UNIT is one of the most versatile and varied bands London has to offer at the moment. They were formed in 2005 by Alex after the break-up of punk band The Flying Medallions.
Punk in England was so dead and boring at the time. But with the chance meeting of Alex and two very talented musicians, drummer Mez Clough and guitarist Gavin Kinch, whose way of playing suddenly made Alex's songs sound super fresh, there was a new punk rock hope.
A unique band in Europe with its own sound, its own humor, its own festival and a deeply rooted DIY background. As lead singer, poet, skater, stage performer and creative motor, Alex Brindle Johnson is the heart of the band, which quite a few people claim is currently the most exciting thing to be seen on Europe's punk rock stages. Music and songs that don't care about genre boundaries in the slightest and yet are always Alex Brindle Johnson and therefore Wonk Unit. Punk has needed new input for years and Wonk Unit deliver exactly that.
On stage, mastermind Alex becomes a steamroller and celebrates fireworks full of energy, anger and irony. Lyrically, Alex processes his diary. For example, he talks about grandmothers, girlfriends who cut their fingers and trains. A band that is simply fun to watch live.
The annual Wonk Fest has become an integral part of the band's calendar, where year after year friendly bands and of course Wonk Unit perform and which is sold out year after year.
Their 8th studio album "Good Good Glad To Hear it" (Pirates Press Rec) was released in early December 2024.
