Woyzeck - von Georg Büchner

Every man is an abyss - no one knows this as well as those who stand inexorably before him. Just like the penniless soldier Woyzeck, who takes on everything humanly possible to provide for his girlfriend Marie and their child. He is his captain's henchman and barber and a doctor's guinea pig. At the mercy of his poverty, Woyzeck's everyday life is characterized by mockery, hounding, drill, contempt and violence. His friend Andres suffers a similar fate, but at least he does not give up hope of a peaceful revolution from below. Marie is hoping for a more independent life, but doesn't know how she could achieve this apart from looking after her child full-time. Her neighbor Margret observes the social situation very closely. An anger grows in her that slowly spreads to everyone else.

In Büchner's drama fragment, all the characters are driven, oppressors and oppressed, victims and perpetrators. Woyzeck's attempt to free himself from the spiral by committing suicide fails. Even the attempted murder of Marie brings no "redemption", no change in the situation. Not even that of the doctor or the captain. The next day, there is a new Woyzeck, a new Marie, who live in social conditions from which they cannot escape. They are all representatives of millions of people who cannot find a way out of the systemic error of poverty and the resulting division of society.

Sarah Kurze began as an assistant director at the tjg. Dresden and at the Berlin Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, at the Theater an der Parkaue, with the group Lovefuckers in the Sophiensælen, the Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Deutsches Theater Berlin, where she also presented her first productions. This was followed by directing work at the Theater Konstanz, the Deutsches Theater Göttingen and the Volkstheater Rostock. WOYZECK will be her first directorial work at Theater Bonn.
