Deserts are extreme. Sun, wind, heat, cold, sand and drought reign there. Only the essentials remain. Those who want to survive return to their roots and adapt. Some deserts seem like places of death, but their silence and emptiness exert a strong attraction. "Desert times" also shape our lives. We often find ourselves involuntarily in "deserts of life". In the Bible and other spiritual traditions, deserts are seen as places of purification, passion, revelation and transformation. Lent before Easter invites us to trace the archetype of the desert and desert experiences.
