The workshop shares the creative methodologies we develop at Kukily when working with collaborators on our public performance pieces. Kukily has developed its own improvisation format based on its XTRÆNCESTRAL philosophy. The approach stems from the process of creating a character through a connection to ancestral memory and exploring how that memory can be expressed through the body and interaction with others. Through exercises accessible to everyone—no prior experience or artistic background required—we will explore movement practices, improvisation, the composition of gestures, and the creation of diverse collective narratives grounded in anti-racist and decolonial aesthetics and thought. We will work with the body, our memories, our inherited gestures, and the ways we inhabit the present to imagine and build, together, a radical anti-racist political proposal. During the workshop, we will explore questions that underpin our practice: What does the future look like from the perspective of Black and Afro-diasporic memory? What possibilities emerge when we dream together through the body, our daily practices, and our artistic practices? What are our practices of resistance? We believe that, at a time marked by the rise of the far right around the world, collaboration and collective creation are essential practices for imagining other possible futures.

The workshop culminates in a one-hour collective performance in a public space.

To participate, you must attend the workshop and take part in the performance. No prior experience is necessary—just a desire to collaborate. Afterward, we’ll share a communal meal.

Who can participate?

The workshop is open to everyone. We especially encourage Black, African, and Afro-descendant people, as well as women, non-binary people, and trans people to participate. People with limited mobility and wheelchair users are welcome. The performance consists of a procession through the city, but the route can be adapted to the group’s pace or include alternative modes of transportation when necessary.

Kukily, an afrofeminist arts collective, consists of Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald, Jasmin Sánchez, Julia Cohen Ribeiro, and Lina Lasso. They work across disciplines and borders within the African diaspora.

Implantieren is a biennial performance festival organized by ID_Frankfurt – Independent Dance and Performance e. V., which has been exploring the boundaries of performance art since 2013.  This year’s edition of the festival will take place from August 21 to 23, 2026, in Frankfurt am Main and Rüdesheim am Rhein. Under the title “Soft Cities – We belong here!”, the festival highlights care, solidarity, and hope, and provides a platform for marginalized perspectives and those affected by discrimination. With free admission, the program includes performances, installations, public space events, and workshops for children and adults, connecting the local performance scene with artists from all over Germany.
