She is not beautiful. She is not clever. She is silent. And that is precisely what causes an entire court in Batzdorf to totter.
In 1935, Witold Gombrowicz created a bitterly wicked comedy about power, convention and the cruelty of the decent in "Yvonne, the Burgundian Princess" - a masterpiece of absurdist theater that still disturbs and inspires today.

Prince Philipp becomes engaged to the unsavory Yvonne because his dignity is insulted by the sight of her and, as a free spirit, he does not want to give in to the natural aversion that this embarrassing young lady arouses. The king and queen take note of their son's engagement so as not to cause a scandal. It turns out that Yvonne has fallen in love with the prince. The prince is surprised by her love and also feels obliged to have feelings, to make amends - both as a man and as a man. He wants to fall in love with her. Yvonne's presence at the royal court causes complications. The mere fact of the prince's engagement becomes the cause of gossip and antics. Yvonne's silence, rudeness, shyness and helplessness put the royal family in a difficult position. Nonsensical suspicions arise; stupidity and nonsense accumulate, of which everyone is actually aware.
Society is on the brink and soon the question is no longer whether it should go - but how. Because even a murder needs to be committed in an appropriate manner.

This year's Whitsun play is a sparkling satire about peer pressure, conformity and the fear of the other. A grotesque play about the fragility of dignity and the violence that lurks behind a polite façade. An evening of theater that combines hilarity and bitterness.
