Against the backdrop of the rise of the new right, the art collective RAUM+ZEIT rewrites and condenses Thomas Mann's novel of the century "The Magic Mountain" into a new, exciting theater experience: Equipped with VR glasses, the audience dives deep into the world of the novel. They encounter its famous characters up close: the engineer Hans Castorp, the lonely Russian Clawdia Chauchat, the wealthy Mynheer Peeperkorn and the nihilist Leo Naphta. Live theater scenes alternate with the intimacy of digital VR encounters. The early 20th and 21st centuries overlap to create an image of a saturated Western society that represses future catastrophes. At the end, every visitor is asked the question: What are you going to do?
Following works at the Residenztheater and the Münchner Kammerspiele (including "Eurydice :: Noir Désir" and "Playing Karlstadt"), RAUM+ZEIT is returning to Munich with its latest work. The collective uses the medium of virtual reality to explore the scope of the digital in the performing arts. Its innovative hybrid theater designs organically combine virtual reality and live performance. RAUM+ZEIT uses VR goggles and 360° film to deliberately blur boundaries - between virtual and analog reality, between dream and reality, between the self and the other. Reflecting on one's own role is an integral part of the audience's experience. In the works of RAUM+ZEIT, one always encounters oneself.
The TUM Center for Culture and Arts brings science, art and society into dialog. Through creative formats, it makes complex research topics accessible and enables both students and the general public to actively participate in scientific and social discourse.
