Zu den Sternen! Weltraum und Weltflucht seit der Moderne im Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck

In the organizer's words:

Space has always served as a powerful projection surface for longings and utopias - in the face of global crises, it still holds the vision of an alternative existence. Apocalyptic awakening and eccentric loss of boundaries are illuminated with around 100 works from modernism to the present day - including works by Yael Bartana, Max Ernst, El Lissitzky, Katharina Sieverding, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Emma Talbot. The view into space reveals cosmic dreams and becomes a reflection on our present and future.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the end of the world seemed imminent. Halley's Comet and its feared collision with the Earth aroused fears and longings. In the face of mechanization and rationalization, a flourishing projection of the earthly into space multiplied in the arts. In theory, it had become conceivable to travel into space and knowledge of astronomy had increased.

Since the 1980s, there has been a noticeable increase in criticism of the seemingly unlimited possibilities of space travel. Hopes of finding alternative life on an alternative planet or making this possible are countered by increasing cultural pessimism. The realization of the finite nature of our vital resources in the face of human hubris and our misconduct is also leading to new discourses in art.
