Zukunftsbilder im Fluss. Wohin mit der Berliner Spreeinsel?
In the organizer's words:
How do we as an urban society want to shape the center of Berlin? What do we expect from the heart of our city - and for whom should this place be there? Should the Spree Island primarily be a place of remembrance and representation or should it offer space for a lively, diverse city life? How can the past, present and future come together here?
These questions have been the subject of intense debate for decades. Twenty-five years ago, the international expert commission "Historische Mitte Berlin" presented a highly regarded draft for the future of Berlin's Spree Island. Its recommendations were highly controversial, but have had a significant impact on the development of this central location: The demolition of the Palace of the Republic and the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace as the Humboldt Forum have redefined the center of Berlin.
To mark the anniversary, the Humboldt Forum invites you to take a fresh look at the Spree Island. The focus is on the formative visions, conflicts and hopes as well as current challenges. Finally, we ask about the future of the Spree Island and its neighborhood, such as the Marx-Engels Forum and the location of the Bauakademie.
Experts from the fields of urban development, architecture, politics and civil society will come together in a polyphonic discussion. Franziska Eichstädt-Bohlig, once a member of the International Commission of Experts, Manfred Kühne, long-time head of the Department for Urban Development and Projects at the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing in Berlin, and Leslie Quitzow from the Federal Foundation Bauakademie will take part in the panel discussion. Building historian and journalist Matthias Grünzig will introduce the topic and moderate the discussion.
