In Germany, May 8 marks the end of the Second World War in Europe and the collapse of Nazi terror. For the forced laborers, it is the day of liberation in a very special way.
Mannheim was part of the industrial war economy and received numerous forced laborers during the Nazi era; there were also satellite camps and deportations, traces of which can still be seen today. Sites of remembrance such as the Sandhofen concentration camp memorial commemorate this de facto involvement and the people who were forced to work here. This makes May 8 a day on which not only the victory over National Socialism is celebrated, but also the suffering and historical involvement of the city must be openly acknowledged.
In Jungbusch - a district known today for its vibrant culture - such memories, which are difficult to access, lie just beneath the surface: Jewish life, forced labor, deportations and the social consequences of the post-war period are all part of the local search for traces. This is why this tour of the district is a form of local remembrance; places and names become visible again and force a confrontational examination of the past.
A political day of remembrance: remembering here means naming - perpetrator structures, followers, the role of industry, but also the suffering of the victims.
Forced laborers were deployed at over 15 locations in Jungbusch.8 May is not just a date in Germany and for Mannheim - it marks the end of the Second World War in Europe and the collapse of Nazi terror. In Mannheim, this day is increasingly seen as a day of liberation and as an opportunity to make local responsibility visible: the city, church communities, civil society initiatives and cultural actors have since organized joint commemorative and educational programmes under leitmotifs such as "Remembering, Understanding, Shaping".
The forced laborers were fed centrally. At the end of the tour, we will cook the inferior dish of the day together according to the original NSDAP recipe.
