Zwischen-Räume - Bilder von Lutz Gode & Wolfgang Sobol
In the organizer's words:
Spaces in between are by no means empty areas - they harbor tensions, transitions and enable new perspectives. The exhibition by Wolfgang Sobol and Lutz Gode also makes such in-between spaces visible. The two Thuringian artists met in a situation that arose after an exhibition was canceled at short notice and developed a joint artistic dialogue in which their works are deliberately juxtaposed.
Lutz Gode creates expressive and at the same time highly sensitive large-format paintings, portraits and paper sculptures in which he thematizes both the wonders and abysses of the world. His works are mainly created as mixed media, alternating between abstraction, graphic rigor and direct, sometimes letter-based expression. Daily sketches and visual diary entries reflect perceptions and evaluations of his life. Lutz Gode was born in 1940 in Beuthen (now Bytom, Poland). After studying mural painting at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, Gode began teaching artistic design at the Erfurt University of Education in 1965 and later worked in the field of art education at the University of Erfurt.
Wolfgang Sobol' s unusual view of landscape is evident in his analytical-structural, painterly treatment of his experiential spaces. His focus is on the depiction of structural characteristics, especially tree forms. Pale-colored gradients in the sky open up a seemingly endless background - perhaps also the "Sobol horizon" - against which stripped-down giant trees gesturally unfold their essential features. Nature appears here in the broadest sense as a form of existence threatened with disappearance. This perspective - the permanent transience of all existence - is deeply anchored in his works. Wolfgang Sobol was born in Blankenhain near Weimar in 1952. He studied sports science, worked with digital photography and completed master classes in painting at the Bad Reichenhall Art Academy. Today he lives and works in Altersbach (Thuringia).
