Impulse Festival für Performance, Theater & Tanz
In our words:
For us, the Impulse Festival is one of the cultural highlights in NRW every year because it shows exactly what we love about culture: Things that you can't predict. Free theater, inspiring exchange and venues that tell a story themselves. Don't miss out!
In the festival's words:
Three weeks. Four cities. And the best that the independent theater and performance scene in the German-speaking world has to offer. The Impulse Festival for Performance, Theater & Dance 2026 will take place from 3 to 21 June 2026 in Düsseldorf, Bochum, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Cologne, making it one of the largest and most important theater festivals in NRW. If you live in the region, you should save your calendar now!
What is the Impulse Festival for Performance, Theater & Dance?
For over 30 years, the Impulse Festival has been the most important platform for the independent theater scene in the German-speaking world. No other festival so consistently brings together the most outstanding independent productions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland in one place, or in this case: in four places at the same time. Contemporary theater, experimental performance, contemporary dance, interdisciplinary works: the Impulse Festival shows what the performing arts can do today and where they are going tomorrow.
The festival is organized by the NRW KULTURsekretariat, with significant support from the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Kunststiftung NRW, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Federal Cultural Foundation. Behind this is a strong cultural policy foundation that has supported the independent scene in NRW for decades.
The Impulse Festival for Performance, Theatre & Dance 2026: four cities, one program
In 2026, the festival will rotate weekly through NRW, with each city bringing its own energy, its own venues and its own audience. The program consists of three pillars:
Showcase: The best productions of the year, selected by an independent jury of experts - the heart of the festival.
Post-West: A program focus on the exchange between East and West Germany and Eastern Europe. Socially relevant, artistically independent.
Impulse meets...: Discursive formats, workshops, parties and encounters with local partners - everything that makes a festival a real experience.
June 03-07: Düsseldorf - Festival opening at the FFT
The festival kicks off in Düsseldorf, and what a kick-off! The opening of the Impulse Festival 2026 will take place at the FFT Düsseldorf (Forum Freies Theater), one of the most important performing arts venues in NRW. Other venues include tanzhaus nrw, Kreativraum D and ES365. In the program: Magda Szpecht with She stands in the Middle of the Battlefield, Sheena McGrandles with the dance piece TOIL, a dinner performance by Dávid Koronczi, the US-American Nature Theater of Oklahoma with Pizza oder Eine Tür in der Dunkelheit tanzt nicht, a concert performance by Tanja Krone & Team and - as a Nippon Performance Nights Special - Michikazu Matsune's Favourite Songs of Düsseldorf (Free admission).
June 10-14: Bochum - returning after more than ten years
Bochum is perhaps the most emotional chapter of the festival in 2026: after an interruption of over ten years, the city returns as an Impulse city and the Prinz Regent Theater (PRT) Bochum is now an official partner institution. In addition, the Zeche 1 theater district is another venue. The program includes tIED tO tONES by Jule Flierl & Camille O and Fortunate Shortcuts by Marie Meyer. A return that brings the Bochum theater landscape and the Ruhr area as a cultural region back into focus.
June 12-14: Mülheim an der Ruhr - a strong scene, a strong place
Mülheim an der Ruhr and the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr have been an integral part of the Impulse Festival for years and will continue to be so in 2026. Julian Warner's Der Soldat - ein Übergangsritual and Michael Turinsky's Work Body are two productions that show how far contemporary theater thinks in its engagement with the body, identity and social reality. In addition, HÜTTENWERK by the railroad theater Das Letzte Kleinod makes a stop at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord: a unique documentary theater experience on the history of the steel industry between East and West, directly under blast furnace 5.
June 17-21: Cologne - Festival finale in the cathedral city
The festival concludes in Cologne with a strong program at the Comedia Theater, the TanzFaktur and the Freie Werkstatt Theater (FWT). With Yoldaş - Frauen, die einander halten by Nihan Devecioğlu, Ash, horizon, riding a house by Netti Nüganen, States of bewilderment by Alina Arshi and STRIPPING BOLERO by Rykena/Jüngst, the festival sends its audience home with a dense, moving finale.
Impulse Festival for Performance, Theater & Dance: venues across NRW
What makes the festival so special is also the view of the venues: they are all independent performing arts venues that stand for contemporary theater and performance all year round. All venues are easily accessible by public transport, the Ruhr region, Düsseldorf and Cologne are closely linked, and you can get from one festival station to the next without stress by train or S-Bahn.
Why the Impulse Festival for Performance, Theater & Dance 2026 is a must for NRW
NRW is one of the culturally richest regions in Europe and the Impulse Festival is one of its brightest flagships. For three weeks, the entire region becomes a stage for free, independent performing arts. What can be seen at Impulse does not come from the municipal theater repertoire, but from the production houses, collectives and artist studios that feel the pulse of the times and bring it to the stage.
Whether performance, dance, documentary theater, concert performance or discursive formats: The Impulse Festival 2026 is a cultural event, meeting place and debate platform all in one. Tickets cost between 12 and 25 euros depending on the production; some formats are accessible free of charge.
