Buchladen Ostertor

The bookshop in Ostertor was founded in 1977 as the first alternative bookshop in the Bremen district. It was an eventful time, shortly after the founding of the University of Bremen and the various political movements, such as the anti-nuclear and women's movements, which also had an influence on the selection of books: political literature from left-wing publishers, books on the emancipation of social groups, history, philosophy, feminism, education, psychoanalysis and subcultures. Over the years, the range has been changed and expanded to meet the changing needs of our customers.

On May 1, 2023, we, Marlene Schmidt and Alena Glandien, took over the helm of the Ostertor bookshop. We were both born in Bremen and got to know each other during our bookseller training in Berlin. We are now fulfilling our dream of having our own store in our home town. We have retained the spirit and the special charm of the bookshop, but have gently modernized it and, in line with our personal interests and skills, have set new priorities, e.g. on English-language literature and children's books. In 2024, the bookshop was awarded the German Bookshop Prize in the Outstanding category, as well as the Bremen Economic Development Agency WfB Sponsorship Award.
