Dionysiuschor in St. Emmeram

The Dionysius Choir in the Basilica of St. Emmeram is enthroned exactly above St. Wolfgang's Crypt and is architecturally surprising: its apse is not elegantly semi-circular, as is usually the case, but strictly rectangular, giving the room an almost castle-like presence.

If you raise your eyes here, you will see the magnificent Benedictine sky: in the 17th century, an elaborate coffered ceiling was installed, whose paintings illustrate the proliferating family tree of the Benedictines and their branch orders. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the Dionysius Choir, however, is what is missing: the frenzy of the Baroque. When the famous Asam brothers transformed the basilica into a baroque masterpiece of stucco, gold and frescoes between 1731 and 1733, they left the western extension completely untouched - as a kind of time capsule. In contrast to the fashionable Baroque style, it was intended to bear witness to the long history and unbroken continuity of the venerable Benedictine abbey.
